Most teachers never get taught this in college. You get classroom management tips and curriculum binders, but nobody hands you the two tools that actually hold a young child’s attention: music and movement, used on purpose.
I found this out the hard way.
Twenty two years ago I got my first teaching job. I was so excited.
I moved everything to a small town on Puget Sound. For a small-town girl from Montana, it felt like a dream come true. Or so I thought.
My first day, I realized I had no classroom discipline skills, a small detail nobody mentioned in college, and about three activities planned that took all of five minutes to teach.
Fast forward past the battle scars and the days I wanted to quit, and I finally found the tools that changed everything: music and movement. Two highly effective, wildly underused strategies most classroom teachers never even know are available to them.
When you learn to use music and movement at circle time, you don’t just get your class’s attention faster. You keep it, long enough to actually teach, rhyming, reading, following directions, all of it.
